This timeline provides an overview of the USTA application process, including deadlines and action items for applicants. Applicants selected for USTA positions will be informed of their acceptance in April. Alternates will also be selected and informed of their status, and may be offered a USTA position on a rolling basis as one becomes available. A non-refundable administrative fee of US $100 is due to Fulbright Austria upon acceptance of a USTA position.

The application period is from November 15 to Januray 15. Please note that only complete applications will be reviewed! Apply online using the online application.

Two Letters of Recommendation (uploaded by reference)
Proof of German proficiency

Applications are reviewed and ranked by selection committee.
Matching meeting – Fulbright Austria (Austrian American Educational Commission) meets with representatives from the Austrian Ministry of Education (BMB), which places candidates for the upcoming academic year.
Applicants receive the 1st Mailing via e-mail. It includes:
Notification of status: all applicants are informed of their status (nominee, alternate, non-select) and their placement
Letter of acceptance
Invoice for processing fee of $ 100
Sign and return the letter of acceptance, enclosing a check for $ 100 (processing fee), to Fulbright Austria within one week of receiving the e-mail.
Nominees receive the 2ndMailing via e-mail AND postal mail. It includes:
Residency permit application information
Bestätigung (confirmation of assignment document)
Please keep Fulbright Austria informed of your current mailing address and e-mail at all times and read the pre-departure handbook carefully.
May – July
Deadline 1 July. Candidates who fail to submit their residency permit application by this deadline disqualify themselves from participating in the program!
To submit your residency permit application,
you will need the following:
Residency permit application form
Birth certificate + apostille
Criminal Record (or lack thereof) + apostille
Bestätigung (see above)
Fill out your application for a residency permit and submit it to the proper authorities. Read the guidelines in the Pre-departure Handbook and inform Fulbright Austria in advance if there are any problems.
July – Sept.
Arrange housing and prepare for departure:
Collect any teaching materials
Make travel arrangements
Use the checklist in the pre-departure handbook to help you remain organized.
Mandatory Orientation Seminar
You are required to arrive by September 19 to finalize your residency permit with the Austrian authorities, make housing arrangements, open a bank account, register with the police, etc.
Attend Saalbach-Hinterglemm or St. Pölten TA Orientation Seminar depending on the region in which you are placed.
Start your contract at an Austrian secondary school and report for duty at the school.
