The USTA timeline: from application submission to your first day
From start to finish, the process of applying for and starting teaching assistant jobs in Austria takes approximately ten months, so having an idea of the various steps throughout the process can help you prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Below you’ll find an overview of the entire process, and we encourage you to factor in this overview when making plans to teach English in Austria.
November – January
Fulbright Austria only accepts applications from November 15 to January 15 for jobs that commence the following October. The entire application process is online. For more information on what the application entails, please consult the Application Materials page.
January – March
The selection committee reviews and ranks applications for the teaching assistant program in Austria. At the end of March, Fulbright Austria meets with representatives of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Research (BMBWF) to place candidates for the upcoming academic year.
Early April
Applicants receive an email informing them of their status (accepted candidate, alternate candidate, non-select) and the school(s) to which they have been assigned. Accepted candidates are required to complete two steps to finalize their acceptance:
Sign and email a letter of acceptance to Fulbright Austria
Pay a processing fee of €100 to Fulbright Austria
Early May
Accepted candidates receive a second mailing that includes:
Information about applying for an Austrian residency permit
A Bestätigung confirming your assignment (to be submitted with the residency permit application)
Information on finding housing
Fulbright Austria medical form
Pre-departure handbook
May – July
Accepted candidates compile the documents that must be submitted with the Austrian residency permit application and make an appointment at an Austrian (honorary) consulate. Residency permit applications must be submitted by July 1!
To submit your residency permit, you will need the following documents:
Passport
Birth certificate + apostille
Criminal record check / police clearance letter + apostille
Passport-sized photo
Bestätigung
Completed residency permit application

July – September
Accepted candidates arrange housing and prepare for departure by making travel arrangements and collecting any teaching materials they would like to use while teaching English in Austria. Fulbright Austria provides candidates with a checklist in the pre-departure handbook to help them stay organized during this period of preparation.
Late September
Mandatory five-day orientation organized by the BMBWF.
You are required to arrive by the Tuesday preceding the orientation in order to finalize your residency permit with the Austrian authorities and your housing arrangements, to open a bank account, to register your place of residence with the authorities, etc.
October 1
Begin your job teaching English in Austrian schools.
