Teaching assistants receive a monthly gross salary of €1,440 from which deductions for compulsory health and accident insurance and Austrian income tax are made, resulting in a net salary of ca. €1,162 (approximately $1,500). Teaching assistants do not receive any additional support for travel to Austria or for dependents.
During the period of their assignments in Austria teaching assistants are covered by the health and accident insurance program for civil servants (the BVA – Versicherungsanstalt öffentlich Bediensteter). For detailed information on the conditions and extent of coverage, teaching assistants should consult the BVA website at www.bva.at.
Coverage includes treatment for illness and injuries, eye examinations, some basic dental care, some medication, therapy and/or lab work if prescribed by a phsysican, as well as hospitalization. Many Austrian physicians or hospitals have contracts with the BVA. This insurance has a 20% deductible (Selbstbehalt) for out-patient treatment; in-patient treatment (hospitalization) is covered in full.
